Waldoborough Historical Society Museum
Route 220 South, Main St.
Waldoboro ME 04572
207-832-4713
Contact: Steve Cartwright, President
Waldoboro was once host to shipyards which launched fleets of schooners in the great age of sail; a well-preserved village reflects that early prosperity. The best place to learn about this seafaring, fishing and farming community - settled by Germans in the mid-1700s - is at the Waldoborough Historical Society Museum, just off Route One on Route 220 South (Main Street). The museum includes lots of antiques, unusual hooked rugs, quilts, toys, early firefighting engines, an 1857 one-room schoolhouse with books, quill pens and bell, a furnished Victorian bedroom, and a 19th century farmhouse kitchen with all the fixings. Take a stroll on Main Street, under shade trees, beside charming homes and the brick U.S. customs house. From the old bridge, gaze down the Medomak River, where ships left Broad Bay to sail the world. Also worth a visit in Waldoboro is the 1772 box-pew German Meetinghouse, a short drive south of Route One on Route 32. The museum is free and open to the public seven days per week, from the last week in June through Labor Day, and then on fall weekends. Hours are 1:00-4:30 p.m.
